Design sprint for a north star strategy.

Company: Meta;
20+ cross functional partners.

Problem

With new regulations on data collection, the Facebook Ads product had to revise how it collected data for iOS users. This workstream imagined a world where the Ads product was successful without any data collection at all in the next five years. Comprising of a cross org team to strategize and dream of where this idea could go, there were many challenges ahead including:

  • Not having a clear owner or stakeholder (this work spanned across multiple teams).

  • Legal + policy implications (it was difficult to get legal’s advice on an idea that did not yet exist).

  • Working through early Pandemic as distributed teams adapted to remote work.

My Approach

  • Worked closely with 5 Designers and 1 Product Manager, and cross functional stakeholders from ENG, PMs, and Design Leadership.

  • Sprint planning and communication to ensure working team understood the cadence and parameters we’re working in (daily standups, project management).

  • Found the right set of stakeholders that could give us feedback and support (multiple re-orgs, no clear team owners) and built a RACI.

  • Got buy in from design leadership and cross functional leadership org wide by setting up cross org design reviews and check-ins.

  • Built a strong community between the working group to ensure we didn’t get burnt out.

  • Got buy in from several product teams on their roadmaps.

  • Communicating out to broader product org on the work happening .

Results

After an 8 week sprint, this small but mighty group came up with a few design concepts that product teams could adopt in their roadmap process to start building towards a revamped Ads product.
